It’s not that hard to get into college, unless you’re applying to a college that’s really hard to get into. 

Almost 90 percent of four-year colleges admit more students than they reject. According to Department of Education data, there were just 93 four-year colleges (3%!) out of 2,687 that admitted a quarter or less of their applicants in 2023. While the Highly Rejective Colleges get a lot of attention, half of all four-year colleges and universities admitted more than 77% of applicants.

The average admit rate for four-year institutions is 73%. Many U.S. colleges enroll very few students, so it is better to use a weighted average that takes into account the size of institutions.  The weighted average admit rate in 2023, according to Department of Education data, was 58%.

You can look up any four-year college’s admit rate in the table below. The data reflect what these institutions reported to IPEDS, which is why you might see some surprising names among the most selectives.
